As we bid farewell to 2023 and welcome 2024, let us take a moment to reflect on the past year and the challenges we faced as a global community.

The world witnessed many tragedies and conflicts, such as the ongoing war in Syria, the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, the political turmoil in Myanmar, the violence in Ethiopia, and the oppression of the Uyghurs in China. Millions of people suffered from displacement, hunger, disease, torture, and death.

Let us also not forget the Yazidis, a minority whose plight continues to be heart-wrenching. Many are still missing, and families yearn for closure and healing for their loved ones lost or subjected to unimaginable atrocities. Their resilience and continued hope inspire us all to support efforts in finding the missing, providing solace to the grieving, contributing to rebuilding and strengthening the community, and spreading awareness and conversation so such atrocities never happen again.

Furthermore, the call for freedom for the countless Syrian detainees unjustly held in inhumane conditions echoes with increasing urgency. As we carry on with our daily lives, let us not forget the thousands yearning for the moment they can embrace their families again. For the millions of refugees confined to camps, we must forge a path from the shadows of survival to a brighter existence marked by dignity, safety, and a sustainable livelihood. The drive towards this change is not just a hope but a necessity as we strive to transform lives burdened by displacement into stories of resilience and renewal.

With the ongoing atrocities against the Palestinians and all who stand against the human rights violations committed by Israel, we must not stand idly by but tirelessly strive to bring about a lasting ceasefire. The rights of every individual must be upheld. May the year ahead usher in steps toward lasting peace and justice, with communities coming together to rebuild with solidarity, respect, and a shared sense of understanding.

We also faced the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, which claimed more than 10 million lives and disrupted the lives and livelihoods of billions more. We saw the impact of climate change, which caused extreme weather events, wildfires, floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. We experienced social unrest, racial injustice, human rights violations, and cyberattacks.

But despite all the darkness and despair, we also saw glimpses of hope and resilience. We saw people standing up for their rights and freedoms, demanding democracy and justice, and fighting for a better future. We saw people helping each other, showing kindness and compassion, and spreading love and joy. We saw people working together, sharing knowledge and resources, and creating solutions and innovations.

We saw the power of humanity, which can overcome adversity and achieve aspirations.

As we enter 2024, let us carry this spirit of humanity with us. Let us pray for peace and harmony in Syria and other countries who are suffering from war. Let us show empathy and solidarity for people everywhere struggling with conflicts and exploitation. Let us work for a more sustainable and equitable world where everyone can enjoy their rights and dignity.

Let us make 2024 a year of healing and hope, a year of action and change, a year of unity and diversity. Together, we can make a difference in creating a better world for all.
